About Upward Bound

The future is what you make it.  Strive for success - be an Upward Bound student!

This page will provide a brief overview of our program, how to apply, and information for parents.

What is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound is a pre-college program for high school freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  It is designed to prepare these youth for education beyond high school.  The purpose of UB is to ensure that students enroll in post-secondary education.  Time and effort are spent in preparing students for college.  Activities include: providing information on colleges, completion of admissions, financial aid, and scholarship applications, and campus visits.

UB is a year-round program which meets two Saturdays per month during the academic year, along with after-school tutoring sessions, and six weeks during the summer.  For the first five weeks of the summer, UB students live in the dorms on the ASU-Beebe campus with tutor/mentors and residence hall staff, going home on weekends.  The sixth week is for the UB summer trip.

During both the academic year and the summer program, students attend classes and tutoring sessions.  They participate in a variety of other activities designed to prepare them for enrollment in post-secondary institutions.

To Qualify

Students must demonstrate an academic potential for post-secondary education, must be classified as a first-generation college student, and/or come from families with low incomes.

If you are selected as a participant in the Upward Bound program during the school year, you will come to the ASU-Beebe campus on scheduled Saturdays from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. and on scheduled Thursdays from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm for after-school tutoring.  During these sessions, you will receive tutoring in high school subjects that give you difficulty, training in study skills, and personal career counseling.  At an appropriate time, you will receive assistance in securing admission to a college of your choice and in getting the financial aid for college.

You will be able to study on the campus of Arkansas State University - Beebe for six weeks each summer beginning at the end of your tenth grade year.  During non-bridge (underclassmen) summer sessions, you will participate in specially-designed academic classes, tutoring, personal and career counseling, cultural events, recreational activities, and field trips.  The bridge summer session (following graduation from high school) will be a time when you can actually enroll in college courses with Upward Bound paying your expenses.

It costs nothing to be in Upward Bound as the costs of the program are covered under a grant from the Department of Education.  In addition, each Upward Bound member receives a stipend each week he/she attends.

Upward Bound is a federally funded program for high school students and does not discrimate on the basis or color, race, sex, handicap, or national origin.

If you are interested in participating in Upward Bound, please contact our offices for an application.  After you complete the application, have your parents sign it and return it to your school counselor.  If you or your parents have questions about this program at any time, please call Susan Taylor, Director of Upward Bound, at (501) 882-4455 or contact your school counselor.
